The beverage sector’s Lion Brewery, is the market leader in the Sri Lankan beer industry. Its 475,000 hectoliter/annum brewery is equipped with state-of-the-art brewing technology and was commissioned in 1998. The sector owns Sri Lanka's favorite beer "Lion" and also brews the internationally well-known Carlsberg under license from Carlsberg International of Denmark. The Lion brewery employs cutting edge German technology sourced from Krones & Steinecker.
In what would be an important source of future competitiveness, Lion Brewery signed a landmark joint venture agreement with Carlsberg International to venture into India, to take advantage of the market opportunities arising from the growth in the Indian consumer market. The progress of this joint venture in India has been impressive. This Company now operates 4 breweries, one each in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal and Kolkata. Lion will hold a 22.5% stake in the Indian JV company.
The two companies in our brewery sector are Ceylon Brewery PLC and Lion Brewery (Ceylon) Plc. They are both listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange.

Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC brews Sri Lanka’s number 1 beer – Lion and Carlsberg which is brewed under license from Carlsberg International of Denmark since 1993.
The flagship brand ‘Lion” is currently exported to several countries including USA, Canada, Australia, UK, Japan, West Africa and the Maldives. “Lion” was adjudged both a “Superbrand” and a “Powerbrand” during the year 2006. Further in the international arena, “Lion” Stout has won the “Monde Selection” gold medal on six occasions and Strong beer which is exported as “Lion imperial” too has won gold a medal at the World Beer Championships.
With the idea of getting closer to the end consumer and moving further downstream to facilitate doing so, CBL Retailers (Pvt) Ltd was setup as a fully owned subsidiary of Ceylon Brewery Plc. CBL Retailers runs a benchmark chain of wine shops under its name and in providing an on-premise rich beer drinking atmosphere and experience, also runs its own unique chain of pubs named “Machan”.
The company’s operations are highly computerized using cutting edge technology solutions such as ERPs, Sales force Automation systems, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems and Data Warehousing Solutions on a state of art network infrastructure.
